Brianne Holmbeck participated in the second annual Carlisle Sabbatical last fall. She worked with an organization called Emerge Global, a non-profit located in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Emerge Global supports Sri Lankan girls, ages 10-18, who have been removed from their homes due to past abuse or the threat of abuse and are courageously testifying in court against their perpetrators. Emerge teaches these girls a comprehensive curriculum that emphasizes leadership, life skills, and business knowledge, while simultaneously enabling each girl to generate a financial foundation by creating and selling their own unique jewelry.
Brianne’s project focused on developing the staff leadership training materials and conducting teamwork workshops, utilizing skills from her work with a student leadership non-profit. Specific outcomes included:
- Developing and conducting three staff training sessions: a lecture on distributed leadership, a goals and action items workshop, and a facilitated discussion regarding the structure of their program materials
- Facilitating a teamwork workshop for the girls at each of the three shelters Emerge Global works with
- Creating the first draft of their Employee Handbook, including recommendations for future sections
Carlisle & Company was pleased to partner with Emerge Global and make a significant impact in the lives of the girls who have survived abuse and empower them to support themselves and their communities.
